Jennifer ESL: Oral Reading Fluency 3: "There Is Much to Do"

Nora looks at her work this morning. There is much to do. She thinks, "It's too much for me."

No, Nora. It's too much for one day, but it's not too much for one life. Make a plan. It will take days. It might take years, but you can do this. At the moment, you cannot see the end. Keep your course, and you will see it. You'll get there.

The Present Perfect Tense | English Grammar Lesson

When using the present perfect tense, you need an auxiliary verb that helps your main verb to function. In the perfect tenses, the verb (to) have is always the auxiliary verb. In the present perfect tense, the main verb is in the past participle form. This is not difficult for regular past tense verbs. For regular verbs, the past participle form of the verb is the same as the past tense verb, so you just add -ed! But irregular verbs are different and the only way to learn the past participle form is to learn them individually. Past simple or present perfect tense? To answer this question you need to think about time. Finished time and unfinished time. Think about ‘last week’. That’s a good example of finished time. Last week is finished, it’s over. Yesterday, last week, last month, last year, 1991 - these are all examples of finished time… Time that is complete. What about ‘this week’? Is this week finished? No! Not yet. That is an example of unfinished time. There’s still more of this week to come. It’s not finished yet. When you are talking about a time period that has finished, use the past simple. When you are talking about a time period that is unfinished… Like today, this week, this month, this year, use the present perfect. Watch this lesson to learn when to use the present perfect and when to use the past simple tense.

Rob
For all exams, preparation is important.  And one of the best ways to prepare yourself for a listening exam is to listen to as much spoken English as possible, as often as you can.  That's what this student does…

Student
I think that one of the best things is watching TV because even if you don’t understand it, you can understand it from the picture, but your listening skills are improved. But even better, I think, it’s radio, listening to the radio, because you have to concentrate only on sounds, not on the picture.

Rob
So TV or radio are great places to listen to authentic English. Don’t forget that you can also practise your listening skills by watching movies and listening to music. If you listen to something that you find interesting, you are more likely to enjoy the experience and as a result improve your listening.

Also, get hold of some practice tests on CD or as mp3 files and listen to them often. As well as giving you further practice in listening, these tests allow you to become familiar with the format of the exam and let you know how many times you’ll hear the listening text in the real test.

There’s no need to be in a quiet room to do the practice tests. In fact, it’s often better if you’re not – this forces you to focus on the key speakers, with background noise and distractors going on. Language teacher Margaret John says this will help…

Language teacher, Margaret John
Some examinations deliberately put distractors, such as noisy environments like Tube stations and bus stations and airports, behind the speakers. If you’ve been practicing listening that way, you will be in a much better position in exam conditions to be able to handle this problem.

Rob
When you're finally in the real exam, make sure you can hear properly. If you have a problem, tell the examiner right at the beginning - after the exam is too late!

These tips will hopefully get you going in your listening exam. Good luck!
